blogs, who needs em

i have a thing or two to say about blogworld. sometimes i think if i see one more blogger write about how they were "inspired" by this or that, or they post one more photo of bunting or chevron stripes, my head is going to explode. maybe i just read too many design-y blogs, but after a while it seems like everyone is talking about the same dumb stuff and my eyes glaze over.

that's not to say everyone out there is like this, of course. and hello, i have my own lifestyle-type blog on which i am a "sellout" and review products and get paid by sponsors. [not sure this is actually selling out, a favored term by certain other bloggers; i'm pretty sure i've got a business model in there somewhere.] i also don't think i'm writing this just because i'm jealous that ALT is this weekend and i'm not going -- i AM jealous, but not enough to cough up $350+ and drag my nursing 6-month-old along.

but. i used to just read blogs that piqued my interest by their style, photos, whatever -- but then i started craving more substance. pretty pictures were one thing but what i really wanted was something that made me think or appreciate life in a different way. it's like the difference in going from us weekly to the happiness project. my current faves are ones that help me enjoy & find happiness in the everyday, see how others deal with the struggles and triumphs of life, teach me to be a better mama or of course just make me laugh out loud.

so anyway, reading too many blogs makes me compare myself and i don't like that. i start thinking i should change my makeup, my clothes, my writing style, whatever...or i feel bad about myself because i don't own an SLR camera or decorate my home in full anthropologie [a store i don't even really LIKE! gasp, i know]. so maybe instead i'll just stick to these better, uplifting blogs -- and keep posting my silly camera-phone photos and chronicling my life in MY own way, not someone else's. i'll probably still read those lifestyle and design blogs because let's be serious, i still need a little "inspiration" in my life -- but i'll keep them at arms length and remember that i am cool too. just maybe not as cool as people who get invited to speak at conferences.

so take THAT, blogland. at least [in my opinion] i have a baby of baby gap model quality. [did you read that article?] that has to count for something, right?

Good point. I guess those types of blogs don't get the amount of people to keep them going. worthwhile blogs are good.

Thanks for stating your opinion on blogs.

amen sista. after a blogging drama with a crazy relative i totally get where you're coming from, and have found myself experiencing the same feelings about blogging that you do. just remember that lots of people, me included, think your blog is hip, and that you are hip, and that your baby is definitely gap model cute. i think you are a really good writer by the way.

Lyndsey! I don't like Anthropologie EITHER! I thought I was the only one. Learning that someone else in this world doesn't get all worked up about it either really just rocks my universe. And Jack is totally a gap baby.

I COULDN'T HAVE SAID IT BETTER. I actually went on a rant about this on FB (after that Salon article), but deleted it because I didn't want to offend all of my 'get paid to blog' friends.

Life is just too short, and too wonderful, to wish you had someone else's blog life (and let's be real, that's waaaaay different from their real lives).

I like your blog, and think you're pretty cool. Just sayin'...

I love that you don't like anthro. I used to love wandering there, but I can't imagine putting any of that stuff actually in my house. And (most of it) on me. I guess at a recent Power of Moms retreat they said according to some poll the number one thing right now that is making moms feel stressed and insecure and just bad about themselves is blogs. I couldn't agree more. Everyone is just too too witty or pretty or gorgeous- blogs don't show us the whole picture.
And btw, thanks for the shout out ;)

Just take my advice and follow suit: blog bi-yearly. :) But continue to still read everyone else's blogs.

Just so you know, you are the VERY first blog I always go to when I enter "blogland". You are a) creative, b) inspirational, c) funny, d) a fashionista, e) my bestie, f) a stationeria ;)

So, pretty much, you probably have NO clue how many people read your blog...just because you're not speaking at some fancy conference...you are speaking to my heart ::cheesy tear::

seriously love this post! I do the blog comparing thing too and when I take a step back and think about it I realize how ridiculous it all is! I've never bought a single thing from antho and I kinda like my cheap style. I love reading your blog and baby jack is a stud! I was also going to tell you I may copy your 'day in the life idea' I work from home too so it seems fitting. So there ya go, your blog inspires me!

Lyndsey, great blog!! I have mixed feelings about blogs... some leave me laughing and/or grieving and/or inspired, and others just make me feel bad about myself. Haha! It's a weird phenomenon. I love the blogosphere, but you're right, sometimes things feel repetitive. But thanks for the tip on the Happiness Project!! I'm checking this one out.

Just for the record, your blog is awesome and so are you! I'm sure people look to you and want to change who they are to be like YOU! It's true.

i hear ya lyndsay. way to stick it to em. i also have a love/hate relationship with blogs and can't spend too much time perusing them lest the inevitable comparisons begin and I am left dejected and empty. i love them but only in small dosages. i will have to check out your happy blogs. i love your blog by the way- you have nothing to be ashamed of. you are cute, witty and talented. so there.
